THE MAN
THE MAN

John W. Atherton stands out as one of the most distinguished figures in Marin County history, respected and admired by all who knew him. With a career marked by both public service and private enterprise, his influence left a lasting imprint on the region. After falling in love with the beauty of Marin County, Mr. Atherton purchased land in Novato, where he would establish his legacy. His adventurous youth as a sailor, which included surviving three shipwrecks, instilled in him resilience and adaptability—traits that served him well in the demanding environment of the West. Atherton’s journey from Boston, traveling around Cape Horn to pass through the Golden Gate, speaks to the grit and determination that defined his life.

Settling in Novato, he soon sent for his childhood sweetheart from Blue Hill, Maine, and together they built a thriving life. Though never seeking political office, Atherton’s integrity, resourcefulness, and unwavering dedication to the community earned him the respect and recognition of his peers, leading to civic honors bestowed by popular acclaim. Known for his hard work and genuine interest in others, he was beloved by all. A devoted family man, he ensured his wife and four children were well provided for. Even in the halls of the state capitol, he was admired for his diplomatic skills and was remembered as a stalwart citizen, a true friend, and a paragon of honesty.

THE HOUSE
THE HOUSE

Atherton’s 400-acre ranch and grand Victorian-style house were marvels of innovation in agricultural and architectural development. Built in 1892, the house showcased the latest advancements of the time. In 1946, the historic home was preserved when Mr. and Mrs. Frank Pinheiro relocated it a block south to make way for the construction of Highway 101. Captured in a photograph taken after 1900, the house reflects the elegance of Victorian architecture.

On the estate, Atherton built barns for his livestock and cultivated a rich orchard and vineyard. His efforts produced abundant harvests, including apples, apricots, peaches, and grapes used to make wine. His family enjoyed the bounty of their ranch, including fresh milk, butter, eggs, beef, and poultry. The property was also renowned for its flourishing gardens. As noted by Mrs. McGlauflin in a 1963 issue of Novato Advance, “There was always a beautiful garden blooming around the old Atherton Place.”
